History and Architecture

The territory of the municipality of Lentate still has a rich tapestry of stately homes built in the vicinity of the Seveso river as country retreats. One of these gems is Villa Mirabello at Birago, built in 1756 by Gabriele Verri, the father of Pietro and Alessandro, founders of the literary magazine Il Caffè, and for this reason frequented by intellectuals of the Enlightenment like Parini. The building, surrounded by outhouses, is a compact block crowned with a turret and embellished by the late baroque frames of the windows and the simple balcony. Here Verri also set up a silk mill to process the cocoons of the silk moths raised locally on the numerous rows of mulberry trees (mürun in the Brianza dialect).
